At least as far back as 1984, there had not been an active Republican Party in Duval County, which left residents in the communities of Duval without equal opportunity in choosing a candidate based on representation of their values - voters could only vote democrat.
Early 2015, C'Ann Henderson contacted the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) and ask if she could get voting machines for the Republican primary election in Duval County, but didn't get an immediate response. In May of that same year, Cassie Daniel with RPT contacted C'Ann to inform her that the County Chair here in Duval was no longer leading local party efforts and had moved away and now had stepped down and asked if she would consider serving in the County Chair role. She accepted.
Prior to the first primary election that included Republican candidates in 2016, C'Ann attended many RPT training classes and made contact with the Duval County Election Administrator and others involved in the elections. The first primary was a real challenge. There were not enough machines or workers for the nine precinct polling places, so the RPT worked with C'Ann and it was decided to combine polling, two precincts per polling place. The RPT funded the rental of the three voting machines for the Republican primary.
Duval Republican primary voters were few, because without Republican candidates running for local offices, such as County Judge, Constables, Commissioners, etc., voters wanted to be able to select their local elected officials, and they all ran on the democrat ticket.
Republicans showed up to support Trump and Abbott in the General Election, but we couldn't gather a win for either, but one Precinct "turned red."
In late 2019, C'Ann asked Mary Wilson to assume the County Chair position. She was elected to the position in 2020 and has brought new life and more energy to our Duval County Republican Party.
During the 2020 campaign season, Mary and the party leadership organized several Republican candidate meet & greets for the community to get acquainted with not only the candidates, but also the conservative principles and values of being a Republican. She also planned and organized many "TRUMP TRAINS" where Republicans and President Trump supporters donned their vehicles with American Flags and Trump flags in a caravan throughout the communities of Duval County, showing their support for our 45th President Donald Trump.
In the 2020 General Election, Duval County turned out a considerably higher number of Republican voters and recent community events hosted by our party have been successful in educating the difference between democrat and Republican values and principles. In Duval County, President Donald Trump received 31.6% of the votes in 2016 and then 48.4% of the votes in 2020 - that's a shift of 16.8% toward Republican support!
And, we're just getting started!
